In Vino Veritas

We were lucky enough to spend March and April living in St. Helena California which is one of our happy places.  We tasted some wine, ate some great food, had time with close friends and mostly just let ourselves be.

Maybe it was the freedom from lots of daily responsibilities or maybe it was the wine but we both did a lot of reflecting over these last two months.  Here is some of what we have uncovered.

  1. Getting outside really matters to our emotional and physical health.
  2. The best measure of a “good” day is our degree of connection as a couple.
  3. Spaciousness is easier when we are away from our daily lives and even then we have to help each other achieve it.
  4. Don’t drink tequila after starting with wine.  “Tequila is a  jealous mistress.” Thanks to Josh at  Trefethen Winery for that nugget.
  5. Cancer is hard AND we can still find fullness and joy almost every day.
  6. There is a difference between needing “help” and needing “care.” More on this at some point, maybe.
  7. Sad isn’t bad, it’s just sad.
  8. Listening to our bodies is hard but remains an aspiration. So much wisdom there.
  9. Grilled avocados remain a revelation.
  10. We might actually be cat people after all even though Dan is allergic.  We’ll miss Bullseye, Licorice and Fluffy!
  11. We feel a greater sense of freedom when we do less but we are both really bad at doing less. Duh.
  12. We really loved watching Jamie Ding win 24 consecutive games on Jeopardy. He was a model of grace and humility.
  13. Coming back home and back to “reality” is hard even as it is great to be back in our community.
